In China, Pajamas Are Not Just for Bedtime

Re "The Pajama Game Farm in Shanghai," by Gao Yubing (Op-Ed, May 17):
For an old man like me in my 80s, I can say that in ancient China, "pajamas" are not real, but daily wear pajamas among most Chinese, especially among farmers in the country and the workers in cities. They were cheap, convenient and comfortable. It was Western journalists, who began calling the wear of ordinary people "pajamas" - because they look like pajamas.
In ancient times, Chinese people often felt insulted when Hollywood films have begun to identify Chinese women with bound feet, braids for men, opium and now pajamas. Even today, many Chinese are sensitive to these misconceptions among Westerners. Beijing leaders are perhaps more - so a prohibition of "pajamas" in public, if only to avoid the curiosity of strangers when visiting the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
Believe me, today in China, relatively few can afford to wear real silk pajamas in public, if only to show their wealth.
